Armatac Industries just sent us a link to their video on the new SAW-MAG (also written SAWMAG) 150-shot double-drum mag (magazine), which represents an evolutionary improvement over their CL-MAG. The SAWMAG is billed as the “ultimate feed device” and “the solution” for the Marines’ HK M27 IAR (Infantry Automatic Rifle), which is essentially a heavy-barreled HK416 gas piston/op-rod-driven AR-config (AR-15-config) rifle/carbine designed to augment or replace the FN M249 SAW/LMG (Squad Automatic Weapon/Light Machine Gun) in the infantry squad with a lighter high-volume full-auto firing magazine-fed weapon. Editor’s Note: Some IAR candidate weapons in the USMC IAR competition, like the Colt IAR, for example, incorporate a large heat sink underneath the (enlarged) handguards (along with the aforementioned heavy barrel) to further dissipate heat.

The Armatac SAW-MAG is 4179 STANAG compliant, and weighs approximately 4 lbs empty, and approximately 8 lbs when loaded with 150 rounds of 5.56x45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO)/.223 Rem. ammo. A fully-loaded SAWMAG-outfitted AR-config HK M27 IAR weighs less than an empty M249: approx. 16-18 lbs (fully-loaded IAR) vs. approx. 22 lbs (empty M249 SAW).

The HK IAR was chosen in late 2009 in a down-select over the FN Herstal (FNH) and Colt Defense candidate IARs, and its been reported that the U.S. Marine Corps plans to purchase 4,100 units (HK IAR’s).
