Being no stranger to BCM (Bravo Company Manufacturing) products, I used both a BCMGUNFIGHTER MOD 1 pistol grip and BCM ambidextrous charging handle down range during my last tour on my MK18 carbine (see Tactical AR-15/M4/M4A1 Carbine/SBR Aftermarket Accessories for Military Combat Applications: The Competition-to-Combat Crossover, Part 2). I think they definitely hit the mark with their BCMGUNFIGHTER Stock tactical AR (AR-15)/M4/M4A1 Carbine/SBR (Short Barreled Rifle) buttstock.

Since the intended use for this stock is on a tactical carbine, for the past 5 months, I’ve been running one on my registered 11.5 SBR. Rigged up almost the same way my work MK18 is (BCM Gunfighter pistol grip and ambi-charging handle), I find an 11.5″ AR SBR is ideal for CQB (Close Quarters Battle) type shooting (multi-shot engagements with fast splits) while wearing full kit (body armor).

Ready for the challenges of CQB: 11.5″ AR SBR decked out with BCMGunfighter Stock, BCMGunfighter Grip tactical AR pistol grip (Mod 1), BCMGunfighter Ambidextrous Charging Handle and BCMGunfighter Grip stubby vertical foregrip.

The BCMGUNFIGHTER Stock has a very sleek and minimalist design, which means there is nothing to snag on to your kit while you’re mounting the rifle to engage a target. Weight-wise it’s the lightest stock I’ve used when compared to other aftermarket stocks with the same accessories, such as QD sling swivel attachment points on both sides and a rubber base pad. Probably the best feature of the BCM Gunfighter stock is the design of its adjusting lever. It has the most positive lock-up I’ve ever used on a collapsible buttstock. And, this is without the need for an extra locking lever that you have to operate to lock it in place once you get it to the correct length.

Because I prefer the High Ready method of holding the rifle, one key item I look at when choosing a buttstock is the length of the buttpad itself on the stock. The reason; when using the High Ready, because the stock rests between your elbow and armpit area, to mount rifle you must clear the stock from under your arm. To do this, you push the rifle out as raise the stock up your chest to your shoulder. The longer the base of the stock is, the more you have to clear.

I don’t know if the guys at BCM had this in mind when they designed the BCMGunfighter Stock, but because the basepad is only 5 inches in length, coupled with the overall slim design of the entire stock itself, mounting the rifle using the BCM Gunfighter Stock is quick and smooth. This is even more apparent when wearing body armor, with the extra space you have to clear from the vest and any pouches, when compared to stocks with longer base pads and larger overall dimensions. Especially from the High Ready, the BCMGunfighter Stock is again a little easier and smoother. Using a buttstock that allows you to mount the rifle faster means a faster first shot. For tactical shooting like dynamic CQB gunfighting, being able to get on the gun fast is not a bad thing!

The only thing I’ve found a little lacking for my tastes with the BCM Gunfighter Stock is the mounting area for your cheek. Let me point out this applies towards competition use, such as 3-Gun competition. For a competition set-up, I prefer a little more surface area for my cheek to rest on, such as found on the Ark Defense Enhanced SOPMOD stock or a VLTOR EMOD. But, seeing how the BCMGunfighter Stock’s overall design purpose was for tactical defensive carbines, I do not think this is a detractor from wanting to use one. Like many shooters who own or use several AR’s, all of mine are purpose-built. I have both competition set-ups and tactical set-ups. While many of my rifles share common components, I do have some specific items that are different on my match guns than tactical ones. Because of the Gunfighter stock’s light weight, slim design, just the right size base pad, and super strong locking mechanism, it makes for an ideal buttstock for a tactical carbine, and the one I own has found a permanent home on my purpose-built, tactical-use 11.5″ SBR.

The Wrap Up

Like other BCM accessories that have proven to be solid items, the BCMGUNFIGHTER Stock is no exception. It’s lightweight, slim-profiled, works well with body armor, and has bombproof lock-up. In need of a quality buttstock to outfit your AR? Then the BCMGunfighter Stock by BCM is worth a very serious look.
