DefenseReview recently got a chance to put approx. 1200-1300 rounds through two 5.56x45mm NATO (5.56mm NATO)/.223 Rem. select-fire FERFRANS SOAR (Special Operations Assault Rifle) subcarbines/SBRs (Short-Barreled Rifles) with 10.5” and 11.5” barrels, respectively. We ran both guns on semi-auto and full-auto.

Designed specifically for Direct Action and Security Operations (particularly deployment/employment from vehicles), the FERFRANS SOAR is essentially a select-fire AR-15/M16-based short-barreled rifle (SBR) designed to fill the same role as the SOPMOD M4 CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Receiver), although the SOAR utilizes a…

proprietary rate reduction system that brings the weapon’s cyclic rate/rate of fire (ROF) down to approx. 650 RPM (Round Per Minute). The SOAR also incorporates an A.R.M.S. S.I.R. System Mil-Std-1913 quad rail system/forend rail tube for mounting accessories (including combat optics, tactical white lights, targeting lasers/illuminators, and vertical foregrips), as well as a Smith Enterprise muzzle brake.

We also got to put some rounds through a 7.62x51mm NATO (7.62mm NATO)/.308 Win. FERFRANS SOPMOD M14/M1A EBR-type rifle/carbine at multiple steel targets at relatively short ranges out to 200 yards, firing both off-hand and from the bipod (200 yards was the furthest the targets went out at this particular range). This rifle is semi-auto-only, and is built using a Sage International, Ltd. M14/M1A EBR (Enhanced Battle Rifle) Chassis Stock System/kit.

We’re going to be publishing a more detailed article–along with photos–on our sessions with them, very soon. Subsequent to that, we’ll publish video footage from these sessions. In the meantime, we’ll just say that all the FERFRANS guns are runners, and we came away highly impressed with them. We also shot video footage so our readers can see the guns in action. The FERFRANS SOAR SBR/subcarbines we fired would be well-suited to any mission where CQB/CQC (Close Quarters Battle/Close Quarters Combat) is likely to occur.

Until then, however, we recommend you read our initial “heads-up”-style article on FERFRANS Specialties’ tactical weapons packages.
