In addition to the USNV iTelligent 4×32 ACOG Combat Optic Adapter for the AN/PVS-14 night vision monocular, US Night Vision also showed the new USNV iTelligent ™ iPad 3 Night Vision & Optics Adapter and iTelligent iPhone 4/4S Smartphone Adapter for sniper spotting scopes at SHOT Show 2013. DefenseReview (DR) could tell you about it, but how about we just let USNV's Chris Byrd do it (excerpted from the embedded video below):
"What we've done, here, David [Crane], is we've adapted our iPad frame with the new iPad to a number of different spotting scopes. We're the first company in the world to now adapt to the Leica APO. We've got Swarovski. Of course we've got the Leupold Mk-4. We've got some lower-end Leupold scopes for your budget buyers. All of our frames will not only take an iPad, we've got the Samsung S3, we've got the new Blackberry Playbook.
The iPad capability on the back of these gives you extreme standoff. You're talkin' facial recognition on some of these devices at 700-800 meters. This is a force multiplier [that] really protects either the agency or the troops. You can reach out and touch somebody. Everything is able to be recorded, obviously, in 1080p. You can talk to it, so while you’re lookin’ at a suspect, you can make anotations verbally so you know what you’re lookin’ at when you replay the video. And of course, from there, you can email or SMS [text-message] the information right out, right off the tablet. Everything comes apart. There's no modifcation to any of the devices.
Everything that we make is MILSPEC, here. We're gonna' keep pushin' the technology with some of our partners like Sprint and Verizon, who are now workin' with us. See here the Mk-4. We can go night-vision-capable on the front of this with the iPad on the back. We've also got some new films that'll make the iPads or iPhones NVIS-compatible per MILSPEC, so there only able to be seen with night-vision equipment and you can still use 'em and swipe the screen."
The following information on the iPad adapter technology/hardware comes directly from the US Night Vision website (slightly modified for readability):
"USNV iTelligent ™ iPad 3 Night Vision & Optics Adapter – OD Green Xylan® Finish
Styled after our iPhone cases these Patent Pending iPad 3 Optics Adapters are custom fitted to exacting tolerances. Utilizing the 5mp Camera iSight Camera on iPad 3 we are able to couple optical and digital devices like never before. The retina display is amazing and the processing power allows instant manipulation of video playback such a pinch zoom of live video, stop frame, frame grab, screen shot and instant sharing via 4G or WiFi.
We have included many 1/4-20" mounting points on the frame for a multitude of options for mounting various optics and related accessories such as support arms for large optics and/or lasers & lights. We also allow access to all ports and buttons for easy use with all accessories.
To further protect your device we also include an industrial grade protective graphic backer. Not only does this act to further dampen and protect the device it also adds a matte non-reflective finish for use at night.
Connecting with the iPad 3 adapter is our 360º clocking ring for use with current night vision, infrared devices and daytime optics. The adapter allows the use of the smart device camera to interface with a wide range of Military Grade Optics.
