While DefenseReview (DR) was at the LMT Defense booth at SHOT Show 2012, we ran into the boys from XS Products and they were kind enough to show us their 50-round drum 5.56mm NATO (5.56x45mm NATO)/.223 Rem. X-15 AR-15 Mag and 7.62mm NATO (7.62x51mm NATO/.308 Win. X-25/X-14/X-FAL/X-91/X-10 Coil Mag for tactical rifles of various types, including the AR-15, AR-10, SR-25, M14/M1A, FAL, HK-91. We believe they were showing to the LMT folks for use in their guns, including the new LMT LM8MRP and LMT LM8MWS, both of which Defense Review has covered. The mags looked good, but DR hasn't run them at the range, yet, nor have we received any hands-on 3rd-party feedback on them to date.
In fact, interestingly, the XS Products website features a flyer showing what at first appeared to be a Short Rifle Stock System (SRSS) BullDog 762 Gen-4 bullpup M14/M1A rifle/carbine outfitted with a XS X-14 Skeletonized Coil Mag, but, upon closer inspection, is a Juggernaut Tactical Rogue Bullpup Chassis System M14/M1A rifle stock.
Defense Review will try to get ahold of one or two X-15 drum mags, but we've already gotten used to using the SureFire MAG5-60 HCM (High Capacity Magazine) 60-shot mag and MAG5-100 HCM 100-shot mag, which are 4×2-config "quad-stack" 5.56mm NATO/.223 Rem. box magazines. Box mags are more ergonomic and easier to handle, and manipulate quickly than drum mags so speed reloads can be accomplished more quickly and easily with them than with drum mags.
